The Six Global Competencies in an AI World

At Keller Education, our mission is to integrate the 6 Global Competencies into every lesson and curriculum across schools in Africa.

These competencies— Collaboration, Communication, Character, Creativity, Citizenship, and Critical Thinking — are essential for preparing students for the future.

However, as technology evolves, we must also consider how these human skills intersect with artificial intelligence (AI). In our upcoming AI course for teachers, we explore how these seemingly disparate concepts can be harmoniously merged to enhance learning and teaching.

1. Collaboration: Working with AI to Create Unique Solutions.

Collaboration in the 21st century extends beyond human interactions to include working with AI. Teachers can prompt students to ask,

“I wonder how I could work with AI to create something unique?”

By collaborating with AI, students can leverage technology to enhance their projects, gain new perspectives, and develop innovative solutions. This collaboration teaches students to see AI as a partner rather than just a tool.

2. Communication: The Art of Clear and Specific Requests

Effective communication is crucial when working with AI. Teachers should emphasise the importance of being clear and specific in their requests.

Typing precise instructions ensures that AI provides the most relevant and accurate responses possible. Moreover, students should learn to evaluate AI-generated content critically.

Before publishing or sharing AI-assisted work, they should consider how they would respond if they were the recipient. This practice fosters awareness of AI’s influence on communication and the need for clarity.

3. Character: Building Resilience Through Iteration

AI provides an excellent opportunity to build character, particularly resilience. When using AI, it’s essential to understand that the first attempt is seldom perfect. Additionally, if you’re rushing with a 10 – 20 word prompt, you’re never going to get the desired output.

Teachers should encourage students not to be lazy or give up easily but to iterate (converse back and forth) and refine their work until they achieve the desired outcome. This iterative process helps students develop perseverance and a growth mindset.

4. Creativity: Exploring New Ways to Pose Problems

Creativity flourishes when students ask themselves, “What other ways could I use AI, and how could I pose this problem differently?” AI can inspire creative thinking by offering diverse approaches to problem-solving.

Teachers can guide students to use AI in brainstorming sessions, exploring various angles and methods to tackle challenges, thus expanding their creative horizons.

5. Citizenship: Developing a Rapport with AI

Just as building rapport with a new neighbour or student is vital, fostering a relationship with AI is equally important.

Good digital citizenship involves understanding AI’s capabilities and limitations and learning how to interact with it effectively.

By getting to know AI and allowing it to understand their needs, students can maximise its potential. Teachers should highlight the importance of responsible and ethical AI use, ensuring students respect and utilise AI wisely.

6. Critical Thinking: Evaluating AI’s Responses

Critical thinking remains a cornerstone of education, especially in the context of AI. Students must be trained to always check and evaluate AI’s responses critically.

Encouraging a suspicious and cautious mindset helps students discern the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated information. This practice ensures that they do not accept AI outputs at face value but analyse and validate the data.

Prioritising Human Skills in the Age of AI

Despite the growing influence of AI, the focus on human skills – Global Competencies – remains paramount.

Our course poses a crucial question to educators: “How much time are we spending focusing on human skills?”

By balancing AI integration with the development of these competencies, we prepare students not only to adapt to technological advancements but to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

At Keller Education, we believe that integrating AI with the Six 6’s enriches the educational experience, developing well-rounded individuals equipped for the future.

As we continue to innovate, we remain committed to our core mission: nurturing the next generation of thinkers, creators, and leaders.
